Love for Food

Carnaval is over, but the groovy rhythms that Jamiroquai played at their show here in Floripa are still with me. Soon after I found out that they would stop here on their South America Tour, I got excited and wanted to do something special. And since it’s carnival, there really are no limits. So as an homage to Jay Kay and his fun collection of hats, I did a DIY feather crown. It reminded me a lot of crafting in kindergarten, only now a little more sophisticated. Gold studs, hellooo, right?! /// O carnaval acabou, mas o ritmo groovy tocado por Jamiroquai no show deles aqui em Floripa continuam comigo. Logo após descobrir que eles iam parar aqui no tour pela América Latina, fiquei animada e quis fazer algo especial. E já que é carnaval, não tem limitações. Então em uma homenagem ao Jay Kay e sua coleção divertida de chapéus, fiz um DIY de uma coroa de penas, ou penacho (palavra nova no meu vocabulário). Parecia bastante com trabalhos artesanais do jardim de infância, porém mais sofisticado. Tachas douradas, alôô?!
What you need: flexible cardboard, feathers, glue, rubber band and for decoration satin band, studs and colored gemstones (these are plastic). /// Você precisa de: papelão flexível, penas, cola branca, fita elástica e para decorar fita larga, tachas e pedras coloridas (essas são de plastico). Measure your head and decide where you want the bigger feathers, stick them through the cardboard and fill the space between with shorter feathers. I wanted a front and a back layer, so I used doubled cardboard (see picture below) and stuck all the black feather in the back row and the white feathers in the front row. /// Mede sua cabeça e decide a altura das penas grandes, enfie elas no papelão e preencha o espaço entre elas com penas menores. Eu quis ter camadas, então usei um papelão duplo (foto abaixo) onde coloquei todas as penas pretas na fileira de trás e as brancas na fileira da frente.
The white ones obviously had to be pulled through a little further, then I cut them below the cardboard. If you feel like the cardboard doesn’t hold them tight enough, you can apply some glue. Now it’s time for decorating. Glue the satin band to the cardboard (leaving 1cm at both ends without glue) and then glue the gemstones onto the satin band and add studs. When everything is dry, measure the rubber band along the back of your head and staple it to the cardboard. Cut the satin band accordingly and glue the ends to the cardboard hiding the staples. /// As penas brancas obviamente tinham que ser puxadas um pouco mais, depois cortei elas abaixo do papelão. Se você achar que o papelão está muito frouxo, pode aplicar um pouco de colar branca. Chegou a hora de decorar. Cole a fita larga no papelão (deixando 1cm em cada ponta sem cola) e depois cole as pedras na fita e adicione as tachas. Quando tudo estiver seco, mede a fita elástica por trás da cabeça e grampeie ela no papelão. Corte a fita larga na altura do papelão e cole as pontas, escondendo os grampos. And there you go!
